A coup contre-coup injury to the brain takes place when there is a sudden impact to the head.

As a result the brain is rapidly thrust up against one side of the interior of the skull.

Then the brain rebounds and strikes the interior of the skull on the opposite side of the head.

The coup injury occurs at the point in time when the first impact between the brain and the interior of the skull occurs.

The contre-coup injury occurs when the brain strikes the opposite side of the skull.

Gaining an understanding of how coup contre-coup brain injuries occur assists in explaining why injury to the brain show on CT or MRI is located in a region of the brain other than on the side of the skull which sustained direct trauma.
