You are trying to make sense of your world and your options after a Vancouver truck accident. Why are truck accidents so devastating—so much more so, it seems, than car or motorcycle crashes?

The answer is actually quite fascinating as well as counterintuitive.

Dial back to high school physics for a second, if you took it.

If you recall, Sir Isaac Newton derived many interesting ideas about the natural world, including the elegant equation, F=MA. That equation tells us that the force of an object is equal to its mass times its acceleration. Another way to frame this is to say that force equals change in momentum.

That all might sound like gobbledygook—even if you took physics back in the day, it probably does! A metaphor might explain it more clearly. Imagine that you weigh 100 pounds and you run as fast as you can into a brick wall. At your top speed, you reach 20 miles per hour. When you hit the wall, you instantly go from 20 miles per hour to zero miles per hour. Imagine the amount of force against your body and the pain you would suffer—a lot. That is because your momentum changed rapidly.

Now, imagine that a 20-ton truck tries the same maneuver. It drives into the wall at 20 miles per hour. Assume that the truck stops in the same amount of time. Since the truck weighs 40,000 pounds, and you only weigh 100 pounds, the truck imparts 400 times more force (per Newton's nifty equation).

That sounds like a lot, but it really doesn’t do the metaphor justice.

In order for you to exert the same amount of force on the wall as the truck does, you would have to run at a speed of 8,000 miles per hour (20 mph times 400). That is approximately 10 times the speed of sound!

Imagine, instead, that the truck hits the wall at 60 miles per hour—a typical highway speed. You would have to run 24,000 miles per hour headfirst into a wall to create the same amount of force!

Now do you understand why Vancouver truck accidents can be so destructive?
