Your Culture - Your Ideas About Treatment - Your ICBC Claim
Different People - Different Cultures - Different Ideas concerning what will get them better following injury.
It's a big issue when it comes to dealing with your ICBC injury claim.
Western medicine has a very defined set of ideas concerning what you should do to recover from the injuries you suffered in your car accident.
But what if you've been raised to hold a different set of beliefs?
What if you don't agree with the treatments your family doctor (practices Western medicine) has recommended?
I see this all the time.
Most commonly it comes in the form of a culturally based set of beliefs concerning:
Hurt vs. Harm
Here's how it usually plays out.
In many cultures, pain is a STOP SIGN!! So if a particular activities HURTS. We'll you simply STOP doing it.
Western medicine holds the belief that you can experience PAIN or HURT without doing yourself any HARM.
But here's the kicker.
In British Columbia the ICBC injury claims system and the courts are based on the Western legal model. Which, you guessed it, holds Western Medicine in high regard.
It boils down to a matter of education.
Doctors, therapists and lawyers who are dealing with people from "non-Western" cultures (who're injured in a car accident) need to explain all this to the injured individual.
