You don’t have to be a Vancouver bike accident lawyer to appreciate dilemma facing parents and caregivers: How can we get kids to wear their bike helmets all the time? And how can we ensure that kids adjust their helmets properly and adhere to other rules of safe biking?

These questions are profound. They are not simple to answer.

In many ways, kids are pack animals. They want to do what their friends do, whether it is safe or not. If all of their friends bike without safety gear, they will face peer pressure to fit in, perhaps leaving their bicycle helmet at home.

Here are some possible remedies:

  • Buy a more fashionable helmet.

Some fashion-forward helmets, like Gucci's new product, may look great but be cost prohibitive. Others, like the Swedish company Hövding's state-of-the-art scarf/airbag device, may be too radical for kids. Even so, consider buying a more fashionable helmet. If it helps with compliance just a little bit, it'll be worth it.

  • Team up with other parents to enforce safe biking rules.

If your child bikes with friends, you want his or her whole peer group to focus on riding safety. If you bond with the other parents in that peer group—and you all decide on rules to enforce together—the chances of compliance success go way up.

  • Educate your child.

Perhaps your child does not fully realize the dangers of biking without a helmet. Make sure he or she understands. Don't just rely on articles or statistics. Make the situation feel more real. Tell the child about some actual bike accidents and the injuries that occurred.

  • Persist over time and be empathetic.

If your child has been non-compliant, you may be tempted to take the bike away or otherwise punish him or her. Try to work from a positive point of view, instead. You want long-term cooperation, not just one-time or intermittent compliance.
