People often joke that we’re more prone to mistakes as we age.

That we get a little bit more unsure of ourselves and a tad forgetful.

But what happens if an older person makes one of those mistakes when they’re behind the wheel of a car?

We got a glimpse of what that looks like yesterday when two children were sent to hospital after a senior driver crashed a minivan into a Surrey elementary school.

Fortunately no one was seriously injured. But it could have been much worse.

The accident was caused by a 71-year-old driver who stepped on the gas instead of the accelerator.

That’s a pretty major mistake to make.

Fortunately this time it was a wall that bore the brunt of the impact.

But what if it hadn’t?

What if kids had been mowed down instead of just bricks and mortar?

It’s an important question to ask.

Because senior citizen drivers are a  real concern for users of the road in BC.

Why?

The medical community has proven that our eyesight, reaction speed and decision-making ability all decline as we age. And as the accident in Surrey yesterday proves, there’s the potential for disaster whenever a senior citizen gets behind the wheel.

So when you consider that there are half a million drivers in BC over the age of 65, it’s easy to see why many people are starting to worry about the safety hazards posed by senior drivers.

With that in mind, I’d say it’s high time that we start making sure our seniors are up to scratch before they permitted to get behind the wheel.

After all, we already take steps to manage the risk posed by other potentially dangerous drivers such as the young and newly qualified.

So why aren’t we doing this with our old timers too?

Because if we don’t, I’m quite certain that we’ll continue to see accidents like the one in Surrey yesterday. And maybe next time the children involved won’t be lucky enough to escape with only cuts and bruises.
