Resources abound about what to do after a Vancouver car accident. But, what should you avoid doing after a crash?

Familiarize yourself with these common mistakes, and steer clear of them!

Mistake #1 - Driving away from the crash scene

Leaving a crash scene is not only bad form—it is also potentially illegal.

Even if you did not cause the crash, if you commit a hit and run, you could face criminal charges. In addition, speeding away from the scene will not do much for your legal case. Do due diligence. Communicate with the other driver and exchange information. If the accident was serious, fill out a police report and get witness statements. Take it seriously.

Mistake #2 – Apologizing

We Canadians are polite people.

However, now is not the time to apologize—even if you believe you caused or contributed to the crash in some way. Until an investigator turns over every proverbial rock related to your crash, you cannot know what caused the accident and who should be to blame.

Besides, apologizing is not just premature—it is potentially dangerous, legally speaking.

If another person suffered an injury, he could use your apology to pursue a liability claim against you—even if it turns out the crash was his fault.

Mistake #3: Avoiding police questions or lying to an officer

There are ethical reasons to avoid antagonizing or lying to a police officer. There are legal reasons as well. An investigation may later reveal your lies and create tremendous problems for your case.

Mistake #4 - Waiting too long to get in touch with a Vancouver car accident attorney

Unfortunately, accident cases, like fresh fruit, effectively wilt and get worse over time. To maximize your chances for success, you want to act decisively and as early as possible after the crash.
