If Policemen riding Motorcycles Aren't Safe - Who Is?
There’s one group of bikers you’d think would be safe on the streets of Vancouver.
The Vancouver Police Department.
Really, it’s hard to miss their flashing lights and blaring sirens. And unlike your average biker, chances are that motorists are going to treat police motorcyclists with some respect.
The officer in question was escorting a group of pipeline protesters when he was knocked off of his motorcycle by a driver making a U-turn across his path. And he now requires surgery to repair a fractured knee.
It’s an amazing story.
One that highlights the lack of care many motorists display for the safety of motorcyclists.
You see, police officers are amongst the most highly trained motorcyclist on the roads of Vancouver. They’re also amongst the most visible.
So the fact that even they aren’t immune from the negligence of other motorists should tell you everything you need to know about the dangers facing BC’s bikers
Talk to anyone who’s donned the leathers in the Lower Mainland and they’ll tell you horror stories about near misses caused by motorists who either weren’t paying proper attention to their driving or who simply weren’t concerned with their safety.
As drivers it’s up to us to protect the safety of all other users of the road, including motorcyclists. But given the number of bikers who are injured or killed each year, it’s obvious that many motorists aren’t facing up to their responsibilities.
Here’s the thing.
If police motorcyclists aren’t safe, what hope do civilian riders have?
