The conversation may have gone like this:

" Alright, just sign this form - we'll need it in order to get your doctors records so we can settle your claim"

or

" It's nothing to worry about - just sign here so we can get you fairly compensated for your injuries"

And at the time, you thought nothing of it.

But.

Do you have any idea what ICBC can do with the medical release you signed?

I'll tell you what.

In theory, ICBC's standard medical release enables them to get copies of all your private medical records back to the day you were born.

Seriously, read the fine print.

The standard ICBC medical authorization ( which many injured people sign without even reading) gives them carte blanche i.e. there are no limits on their ability to request and review ALL your medical records.

So let me ask you this - what exactly are you seeking compensation for?

If you're like most people, all  you want is to be fairly compensated for the injuries you suffered in your accident.

Alright then. Do your medical records from before your car accident have anything to do with what you're seeking compensation for ?

And what if your medical records from before your accident contain private and embarassing entries. Information which has no bearing on the injuries you suffered in your accident?

Do you want your ICBC adjuster or their  lawyers sifting through this type of personal  information?

Understand this. You have certain legal rights to privacy when it comes to your ICBC injury claim.

But you waive those rights when you sign ICBC's standard medical release.

Interested in chatting about your options when it comes to dealing with ICBC's standard medical release.
