Smoking Dope and Driving - It's a Big Problem!
Getting behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking is dangerous and illegal.
But how about driving after you’ve smoked a joint?
It’s an interesting question. Especially given BC’s liberal approach to marijuana.
However, the simple fact of the matter is that operating a vehicle after smoking dope is just as dangerous, illegal and downright stupid as drinking and driving.
Here’s the thing. After years of education, authoritative action and heart-breaking tragedy we’re finally seeing progress in the battle against drunk drivers.
But while drunk driving is on the way out, driving after drug use is on the rise.
In fact, according to reports over the weekend ,drugged driving is now a bigger problem than drinking and driving.
An article in Saturday’s Globe and Mail cited a recent study in which more than 10% of drivers randomly pulled over tested positive for drug use, compared to just 8% who had been drinking.
Clearly there’s a growing issue here. One that’s putting users of our roads at risk.
And it’s probably going to get worse.
With the recent push to legalise cannabis and the liberalisation of Canada’s medical marijuana laws, more and more people have access to marijuana.
And yet, there have been no serious efforts to educate motorist about the dangers of driving under the influence of marijuana.
It’s an accident waiting to happen.
So it’s time that we started taking driving under the influence of drugs every bit as seriously as drinking and driving.
Because if we don’t, innocent people are going to get injured and killed.
