On Saturday May 25, 2013 a cyclist was tragically killed after leaving the sidewalk alongside the Stanley Park Causeway and being hit by a bus.

And rather than attempting to develop a strategy to ensure this type of thing never happens again, cyclists and pedestrains have "gone to the mattresses".  Tribal warfare has errupted.

Cyclists accuse pedestrains of being "sidewalk hogs".

Pedestrains are screaming that cyclists are arrogant and self-centered.

It goes on and on. But where's are all these verbal volleys headed ? In short, towards nothing of a productive nature.

So, what's to be done ? Is there anything of value that can be derived from the tragic death which has sparked this cyclist vs. pedestrain war ?

Personally, I think so.

The issue of shared sidewalks needs to be revisited. Simply put, is it safe for cyclists and pedestrains to share a sidewalk.

Me. I say NO.
