Alternative Medicine and Your ICBC Injury Claim
EAST MEETS WEST - ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE AND YOUR ICBC CLAIM
"Western" medicine has been characterized by some as missing the big picture when it comes to treating people who've been injured in a car accident.
Some people say that the modern doctor-patient relationship has become more like a business relationship than a healing process. Others worry that the treatment and assessment of medical issues has become so specialized that physicians oftern lack the scope necessary to understand an individual's true condition.
As a result, many people who've been injured in a car accident have turned to alternative forms of healing in order to address their symptoms. And while each individual has a different thought process, the common denominator amongst those I've taked to has been the desire to engage in a form of therapy which focuses on the whole person; both mind and body.
Some examples of the alternative therapies various people with ICBC injury claims engage in include; accupuncture, acupressure, herbal remedies, qi gong and various other forms of traditional chinese medicine.
Many Vancouver auto injury lawyers express concerns about their clients engaging in "non-Western" forms of healing. However, I've found that many of my clients have benefitted from these types of treatments. If fact, in some cases, alteranative therapy has done more to help than " Western" medicine.
At present, ICBC and the courts in British Columbia largely base their assessment of ICBC injury claims on the Western medical model. However, its apparent to me that alternative forms of healing are slowly but surely gaining an increased level of respect as a legitimate means by which to treat injuries suffered in a car accident.
Moreover, I believe that there's increased recognition in the legal system that there's ample room for both eastern and western forms of treatment when it comes to treating the injured.
As for me, I believe that the best benefit of the injured person should be the primary concern. Their health is their business. And if a person who's injured in a car accident feels that alternative therapy will help, more power to them !
